Certificate of Analysis (COA)¶
A batch-specific COA is included for each product in the shipment. The COA contains:
- Product name, CAS number, batch number
- HPLC purity chromatogram with integration data
- Mass spectrum (ESI-MS or MALDI-TOF)
- Quantitative purity (% area)
- Water content (Karl Fischer)
- Peptide content
- Release date and retest/expiry date
- Quality Control sign-off
Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)¶
An MSDS compliant with GHS (Globally Harmonized System) standards is provided for each product. Sections include:
- Identification
- Hazard identification
- Composition/information on ingredients
- First-aid measures
- Fire-fighting measures
- Accidental release measures
- Handling and storage
- Exposure controls/personal protection
- Physical and chemical properties
- Stability and reactivity
- Toxicological information
- Ecological information
- Disposal considerations
- Transport information
- Regulatory information
Harmonized System (HS) Codes¶
The following HS codes are typically used for research peptide shipments:
| HS Code | Description | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2933.99 | Heterocyclic compounds with nitrogen hetero-atom(s) only | Most peptide products |
| 3504.00 | Peptones and their derivatives; other protein substances and their derivatives | Some peptide mixtures |
| 3822.00 | Diagnostic or laboratory reagents on a backing; prepared diagnostic or laboratory reagents | Research-use classification |
| 3824.99 | Chemical products and preparations of the chemical or allied industries | Custom peptide libraries |
HS code classification may vary by destination country. PeptideSourceHub classifies exports based on Chinese Customs guidelines. Importers should verify the correct HS code for their jurisdiction. The importer of record bears responsibility for correct customs classification.
Country-Specific Import Guidance¶
United States (FDA)¶
| Aspect | Detail |
|---|---|
| Regulatory Body | U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA); U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) |
| Classification | Research peptides generally fall under FDA's enforcement discretion for laboratory research materials, provided they are clearly labeled for research use and not as dietary supplements or drugs |
| FDA Prior Notice | Required for food-related imports but typically not applicable for research chemicals unless classified as food additives |
| De Minimis | Section 321: shipments valued at ≤$800 may enter duty-free |
| TSCA | Toxic Substances Control Act: research chemicals may be exempt under R&D exemption (40 CFR 720.36) |
| Documentation | Commercial invoice, packing list, airway bill; COA and MSDS recommended for customs review |
European Union¶
| Aspect | Detail |
|---|---|
| Regulatory Body | National customs authorities (coordinated by EU Customs Union); European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) |
| Classification | Research peptides are classified as chemical substances for laboratory use. REACH registration may apply for quantities >1 ton/year — typical research quantities are exempt |
| VAT & Duties | VAT applied at destination country rate (17–27%); customs duty based on HS code classification (typically 0–6.5% for research chemicals) |
| EORI Number | Economic Operators Registration and Identification number required for commercial imports; research institutions may use institutional VAT number |
| EU MDR/IVDR | Research-use-only products are explicitly excluded from Medical Device Regulation scope. Clear "RUO" labeling is essential |
| Documentation | Commercial invoice with EORI/VAT number; packing list; COA; MSDS; EU Customs declaration (submitted by carrier) |
Australia (TGA)¶
| Aspect | Detail |
|---|---|
| Regulatory Body | Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA); Australian Border Force (ABF) |
| Classification | Research peptides may fall under TGA scheduling depending on the specific peptide. Most research peptides are classified as laboratory chemicals or research materials |
| Import Permit | Generally not required for in vitro laboratory research use; not for human therapeutic application |
| GST | 10% Goods and Services Tax on imports valued >AUD 1,000 |
| Documentation | Commercial invoice with "Research Use Only — Not for Human Use" statement; COA; MSDS; packing list |
United Kingdom¶
| Aspect | Detail |
|---|---|
| Regulatory Body | HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC); Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA); UK Border Force |
| Post-Brexit | Separate customs territory from EU; UK Global Tariff applies; separate UK REACH |
| EORI Number | UK EORI number required for commercial imports (GB-prefix) |
| VAT | 20% VAT applied at point of import unless using postponed VAT accounting |
| Documentation | Same as EU, with UK EORI number and UK-specific customs declarations |
Canada¶
| Aspect | Detail |
|---|---|
| Regulatory Body | Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA); Health Canada |
| Classification | Research chemicals for laboratory use; Health Canada may require additional information for peptides with therapeutic potential |
| GST/HST | GST (5%) or HST (13–15% depending on province) |
| Documentation | Commercial invoice, packing list, COA, MSDS |
Customs Hold Procedures¶
Customs holds are infrequent but may occur for the following reasons:
| Reason | Resolution | Typical Resolution Time |
|---|---|---|
| Incomplete Documentation | Submit supplementary commercial invoice with additional detail | 1–2 business days |
| HS Code Verification | Provide product description, COA, and intended use statement | 1–3 business days |
| Random Inspection | Physical examination of shipment; carrier coordinates with customs | 2–5 business days |
| Regulatory Query | Destination-country regulator requests product classification or intended use clarification | 3–10 business days |
Hold Rate¶
| Year | Total Shipments | Customs Holds | Hold Rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 | 4,200+ | 34 | <0.9% |
| 2024 | 5,600+ | 41 | <0.8% |
| 2025 (YTD) | 4,100+ | 28 | <0.7% |
Procedures¶
- Carrier notifies PeptideSourceHub of customs hold
- Logistics team identifies the hold reason and required documentation
- Supplementary documentation prepared and submitted within 24 hours
- Importer may be contacted if customs requires consignee-side information
- Resolution tracked; customer notified of updated delivery estimate
Importer Responsibility: While PeptideSourceHub provides comprehensive documentation support, the importer of record (consignee) is ultimately responsible for compliance with destination-country import regulations. We recommend that first-time importers consult their institutional compliance or legal department regarding local import requirements.
